How veneers can be a better choice than dental crowns
Porcelain veneers (sometimes called “laminates”) are very thin coverings that are attached to the front surface of a tooth (or multiple teeth). Some dentists use a resin composite, but our dental office uses porcelain as it resists staining and looks more like the natural surface of your teeth.
What issues can be fixed with veneers?
Veneers can be a beautiful restorative cosmetic dental solution to several appearance-related oral concerns. They can aid in fixing discolorations that are resistant to whitening, resulting from certain medications or caused by large surface fillings. Veneers can also cover chipped or misshapen teeth, slight misalignment, shape irregularities, and gaps between teeth. Veneers may be applied to one problematic tooth or many teeth depending on your needs. They can boost your oral appearance with very little preparation or dramatic change to your teeth.
What is the veneer application procedure like?
Porcelain veneers are usually completed in 2-3 visits. The first visit is a consultation phase with your dentist to determine which teeth require coverings. Preparation of the tooth or teeth may be done during the consultation visit. Initial preparation includes the removal of some of the tooth’s enamel. The amount removed is approximately equal to the thickness of the veneer itself (around 0.5mm). For those with sensitive teeth, numbing may be used during this segment of the procedure to eliminate possible discomfort. Temporary veneers can be employed if the patient so desires as to hide the issue until permanent replacements can be made and applied.
Once the permanent veneers have been created, you are ready for the application. During this visit, Dr. Nozaki will perform trimming or reshaping of the veneers if necessary. The tooth or teeth receiving veneers will be etched slightly to allow for proper adherence of the thin veneer shells. The final steps involve ensuring proper placement, cementing them securely into place and removing any excess. Dr. Nozaki will also, of course, make sure everything feels natural and comfortable for you before you leave.
A follow-up visit at Image Dental on a later date will allow the doctor to make sure that the gums, surrounding teeth, and inside of your mouth are not being affected in any way. As porcelain tends to get along well with your gums and other soft tissues of the mouth, complications are not likely to occur.
How do I care for my veneers?
When maintained, veneers can last for up to ten years before replacements may be needed. Individual cases may differ but continuing regular, normal dental hygiene can make sure you get the most out of the lifespan of your veneers. No special treatment is needed besides routine brushing, flossing, and rinsing. Avoiding behaviors like tooth grinding can also extend the life of your veneers.
