What is tooth bonding?

Cosmetic bonding is the use of a special, strong material that is applied to the tooth and hardened so that it becomes "bound" to your existing tooth. This is done to fill cavities and gaps, repair chips or badly shaped teeth, fix discolorations or aid in any other minor patching or reshaping that can improve the appearance and functionality of your tooth (or teeth). Bonding may also be used in cases of gum disease when the gum has begun to recede and expose tooth roots. Bonding these areas can help keep them protected.

You can request an appointment if you are in need of tooth restoration and would like to know more about our bonding treatments.

What is Involved in the Bonding Procedure?

Bonding does not require a lot of preparation or lengthy procedure time. Once Dr. Nozaki has matched the bonding material to your tooth color, the actual process is ready to begin.

Before the bonding material is applied, the surface of your tooth needs to be slightly roughened by etching that creates very small, microscopic gaps in the enamel. This allows the bonding material to adhere very securely onto the tooth's surface. After this step, Dr. Nozaki will apply the soft bonding material and mold it as needed. An ultraviolet light is used to harden the soft material. Once hardened, the tooth may need a few slight adjustments to the shape. Polishing the newly hardened bonding is the last step and the procedure is over!

The total length of time for any individual bonding procedure will vary but in general, it takes less than an hour to apply bonding to one tooth.

What are the advantages of teeth bonding?

Compared to similar procedures such as crowns or veneers, bonding is less expensive and less time-consuming. The procedure itself is easy on the patient and often does not require any form of anesthesia. Bonding usually only requires one short visit and, as stated above, it tends to take less than an hour. The time required, of course, needs to be adjusted based on the amount of work needed.

Who iBefore and After Tooth Bondings the best candidate for bonding?

Bonding is usually a great choice for someone who needs to fill a cavity from decay or those with small cosmetic issues such as gaps or misshapen teeth. A discussion and short exam with your dentist will be able to inform as to the extent of work needed for each individual. Bonding can be a great, inexpensive way to improve the look of your beautiful smile!

How do I best care for bonded teeth?

Bonded teeth do not need any special treatment. Great oral hygiene will ensure that you get the longest life out of your dental bonds. Brushing, flossing, and use of mouthwash as usual will keep your bonded teeth in good repair. Avoiding chewing on or biting hard objects such as fingernails or ice can also help make sure to avoid chips or breaks. Bonded teeth can last up to ten years without touch-ups or replacements but good oral hygiene is vital.
